Controversy About Choices for Future of US Government's GSEs (government sponsored enterprises)

Will The US Government's GSE's ever break even?  Are they institutions that US taxpayers can trust?  Will they ever get out of debt?

What are President Obama choices for the Future of GSEs?

The controversy in the United States about mortgage government sponsored enterprises (GSEs) was started after the accounting scandals, and lots of people urged the US government to tighten control over them.

The two largest housing GSEs -  Fannie Mae (FNMA) and Freddie Mac (FHLMC) - own and/or securitize upwards of 70% of the residential mortgage loans in the United States.

These GSEs will probably not be allowed to fail.  They have a line of credit with the U.S. Treasury and other benefits of GSE status, such as exemption from state and local taxes.

What are options available for President Obama for the GSEs and their future?
