Irvine City Approved No-Fee Solar Permit Program

Irvine city logo 40 years

The Irvine CA City Council recently approved some business-friendly initiatives, including the No-Fee Solar Permit Program, which waives permit and plan check fees for solar systems in Irvine.

The Irvine City initiated this program in support of Measure S, the sustainable community initiative which was passed by more than 70 percent of Irvine voters and in support of the City’s energy plan, which seeks to increase renewable energy usage throughout the community.  Programs like this can help homeowners and businesses keep energy costs low and reduce environmental impacts.

As part of the No-Fee Solar Permit Program, the Irvine city Community Development Department has begun over the counter review of solar systems for single-family residences. More than 300 solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, which convert sunlight to electricity, have been installed in Irvine to date, representing a significant increase over the previous year.

Solar installations are expected to further increase as result of recent cost reductions for solar PV panels, availability of a 30 percent Federal Tax Credit, and new California Solar Thermal Initiative, which provides cash rebates of up to $1,875 for solar hot water systems.
