Internet Sales and Use Tax Collection Problems Might Be Cheating California State of $1 Billion Revenue

Surprise.  If you are in California and bought anything from Amazon.com online ... or from L.L. Bean ... and other online retailers this year who did not charge state sales tax, you owe the State of CA 8.25% for use tax on that purchase.

State officials say that Internet sales tax collection problems cheat the state of its use tax revenue.  Some say that online shoppers who have failed to pay California's use tax owe the state more than $1 billion.

The California state board of equalization has responsibility of collecting sales and use taxes on from people who have made product and some service purchases from outside the state.

The state use tax would be 8.25% of the cost of goods or services, which is the same as basis state sales tax rate for products purchased in the state.

Question is whether the State Board of Equalization can get people and businesses to comply by registering about purchases of goods and services outside the state.
