New California Law to Protect Motor Vehicle Buyers
Car buyers will enjoy new California law protection as of New Years Day 2010.
The Car Buyer's Protection Act requires car dealers to pay off existing liens on traded in vehicles prior to re-selling or trading the cars and trucks.
Another new law will require the California Department of Motor Vehicles to comply with federal law and allow consumer direct access to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (the NMVTIS). This national auto safety database will give used car buyers the opportunity to search a vehicle identification number (the VIN) to find out whether a car is stolen or salvaged.
The cost to consumer will be small in relation to the higher fees previously paid to private companies for such information.
The California DMV will pilot the program and then roll it out to consumers (according to the Consumer for Auto Reliability and Safety consumer advocacy group).
