Do We Now Have Enough Lawyers?
I'm wondering whether we already have enough lawyers in California and the US.
Also whether the American Bar Association is the right governing body to be approving and certifying law schools. The ABA continues to allow new schools to open and get certified. But is the ABA regulating these schools?
There aren't enough jobs out there now for J.D. graduates and bar approved lawyers. Yet the US continues to have lots of law school graduates each year.
From 2004 through 2008, the number of lawyers in the US grew about 1% per year on average, from 735,000 people to about 760,000. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that the field of lawyers will grow at the same rate through 2016.
The number of lawyer employment positions available will be less than 30,000 per year, but there will be 45,000 J.D. degrees moving from U.S. law schools through passing state bar exams each year.
I can't blame the young people for wanting to go to law school and get the education. But do we really need all these lawyers? If not, what can be done about it?
What, if anything, should be done about this in terms possibly helping the young people in another way ... or a change of public policy whether to limit the number of law schools.
